SRI LANKA INSURANCE GENERAL INSURANCE SUMMIT – 2014
The General Insurance Summit was a two day residential programme, annually conducted to reward, educate, recognize and motivate sales force & staff members of the General Insurance category, which was held at Jetwing Blue, Negombo. Dr. Nirosha Mendis, President, Consultant Psychiatrist of the NCMH was a part of the forum, where he was able to address an audience of 150 participants on the topic of 'Stress Management and a Healthy Balance Life'.

A VISIT TO WATER WORLD – CLIENTS OF THE REHABLITATION CENTRE – BORELLA
The clients of the rehabilitation centre (NCMH) had their monthly day outing at Water World, Kelaniya, on 31 October 2014 and 18 clients and 3 staff officers participated on this exciting trip. The journey started at 9.00am, and they were taken around to see the aquarium, and birds. They were also able to enjoy a sumptuous lunch at the water world, which ended by 3pm.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME WAS HELD AT ROYAL COLLEGE, COLOMBO - 7
Awareness programme on a 'Healthy Balanced Life' was organized by Royal College Counseling Unit, on 30 October 2014 for year 9 students. A presentation on this topic was addressed by Dr. Nirosha Mendis, President of the NCMH, Consultant Psychiatrist. The programme was participated by Teachers of Royal College, Mr.Madura Gunawardena, Senior Mental Health Officer and Mr. B.J. Mudalige, Chief Administrator of NCMH. At the conclusion of the programme, the opportunity was given to the students to express their thoughts and any questions they wish to clarify.
COMMEMORATING WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY - 10-Oct-2014
World Mental Health Day is an annual event commemorated around the world on 10th October. This day was created by the World Health Organization, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues. The NCMH was able to commemorate this event on 10th October 2014, at Head Office, Borella.
The programme commenced by lighting of the traditional oil lamp and a religious activity being conducted by Ven. Athula Thero of Borella. The Chief Guest was represented by Mr. Upali Gunasekera, Principal, Royal College, Colombo, followed by other distinguished invitees as Professor Nalaka Mendis, founder of the NCMH, Dr. Nirosha Mendis, President, Consultant Psychiatrist of NCMH, Mrs. Anusha Gokula, Director, Dept. of Social Services, Air Chief Marshal Harsha Abeywickrema, Former Air force commander, Chairman of BOC, Dr. (Mrs.) Nirmala Wijesinghe, Secretary of NCMH, and Mr. Rohan Weerasekera, National Programme Commissioner Sri Lanka Scout Association and Mrs. Hiranthi Gunawardena, represented the United Nations Information Centre. Participated by the following schools are Royal College, Wesley College and Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya well wishes and friends. An exhibition of Arts and Crafts were organized by the clients of NCMH. The Department of health services displayed exhibits at this event The entire programme was a success with the support and assistance received from the staff of NCMH.

WORLD ELDERS DAY
A ceremonial meeting was held on 07th October 2014, to commemorate World Elders day at the Divisional Secretariat, Thimbirigasyaya. The key note address was presented by Dr. Gamini Prematilake, Consultant Psychiatrist of NCMH and Mr. G.P. Subasinghe, Programme Coordinator, Rehabilitation Division. It was participated by 300 elderly ones, which was a great success.

WORKSHOP ON STRESS MANAGEMENT & A HEALTHY BALANCED LIFE
A workshop on 'Stress Management & Healthy Balanced Life' was organized by Nawaloka Hosptals Plc, at Standard Chartered Bank, Head Quarters, on 01st October 2014, with the participation of Dr. Nirosha Mendis, President of the NCMH, Consultant Psychiatrist. A presentation was addressed to the participants on What is Stress, Signs & Symptoms of Stress, Effects of Stress, Management of Stress and Medical Interventions which was a great success.

FASHION SHOW STEP IN STYLE

The National Council for Mental Health was able to organize an un- paralleled successful Fashion Show ‘Step in Style’ on 20th September 2014 at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo, as a fund raiser.  This event was attended by a large number of distinguished members, well wishers, and public and cooperate sectors. The purpose of the event was to enhance funding in order to maintain the present services and invest in new evidence based services.

The Principal sponsor of the Fashion Show was Ranjanas 7 Stories.  Chief Guest, Ms. Rosemarie Yatawara, Guest of Honors who graced the occasion, Mr. Gamini Ariyathilaka, Chairman Gamini Gems & Jewellary (Pvt) Ltd, Mrs. Hiranthi Gunawardena, United Nations Information Centre, and Mrs. Sonali De Silva. Also present were Professor Nalaka Mendis, founder of the NCMH & Dr. Nirosha Mendis, President of the NCMH.

Entertainment was followed by Musical interlude, Quizzes, table draw, Creative competition, Sing-a-long with the X Pressions and Baila competions and buffet. Management committee along with the staff of Step In Style Fashion Show, are committed to making this year's production one that goes down in history.We also would like thank all who were present and your contributions towards the show will go towards our worthy cause. We are eagerly looking forward to our next year’s giant leap fashion show which plans are already been made to have another successive year.

CARE GIVERS MEETING – ON 31ST AUGUST 2014 AT GORAKANA RESIDENTIAL FACILITY CENTRE
The National Council for Mental Health held its quarterly Care Givers meeting on 31st August 2014 at Gorakana Residential Facility Centre, Panadura. It was participated by Dr. Gamini Prematilake- Consultant Psychiatrist, Mr. Jayanth Mudalige-Chief Administrator, Mr. Madura Gunwardena – Senior Mental Health Officer (Psychologist), Mr. Nishantha Withanage – Senior Mental Health Officer, Staff of the Gorakana Residential Centre, Staff of the Head Office, Borella, Care Givers and Guardians.
It was an open meeting and opportunities were given to the care givers to express their thoughts on their family member, new ideas to improve the quality and standard of the residential centre, the out come of the clients who have been suffering from prolonged mental illness. Dr. Sivakumar, MOH, Moratuwa, stressed the importance of maintaining and continuing the Residential facility centre. The meeting was a success and the care givers were served refreshments, which concluded by mid afternoon.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY – 12TH AUGUST 2014 - PLACING YOUTH AND MENTAL HEALTH IN THE SPOT LIGHT – HELD AT GORAKANA RESIDENTIAL FACILITY CENTRE

The National Council for Mental Health with the United Nations International Youth, commemorated International Youth Day at their Residential Facility Centre in Gorakana on 12th August 2014, focusing on youth and mental health.

A half day's interactive programme was organized with participation, recreation activities, inspirational speeches, music, drama, dance and drawing etc.

With the presence of Dr. Gamini Premathilaka, Consultant and Psychiatrists Mr. Nishantha Withanage, the Senior Mental Health Officer, the Matron and nursing staff of the residential centre, administrative and maintenance staff, who enthusiastically participated at the event.

The United Nations Information Centre gave the clients a memorable time with improving mood and posture of the clients. In addition, UNIC team was able to spend some private time with some of the residents while the activities were going on and the clients were able to share their individual interests, feelings and thoughts.

The day ended by enjoying some refreshments and it was a memorable time, which was specially organized by the UNIC. The UNIC was able to distribute Some literature on UN efforts to make a better world.

INAUGURATION OF SRI LANKAN CHAPTER - WORLD ASSOCIATION FOR PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION (WAPR)
WAPR was established in 1987, to promote the quality of people with long term mental illness by providing necessary Education, Rehabilitation, Treatment, Psychological and Social Care.
The Sri Lankan Chapter for 'WAPR' was inaugurated on the 29th of July 2014, at the main auditorium of the National Council for Mental Health, in Borella. Dr. Afzal Javed, President of the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The other distinguished members were Prof. Nalaka Mendis, founder of the NCMH, Dr. Nirosha Mendis, President of the NCMH, Mrs. Niro Waidyarathne, Secretary of the WAPR Committee, including many other invitees. As the Sri Lankan Chapter, our team comprises of a working committee. Mr. B.J. Mudalige, who will be the team leader of the Sri Lankan Chapter, will be initiating steps to develop and forward drive the chapter.

International Volunteer Programme
On 02nd July 2014 Twenty International Volunteers and officials of National Youth Services Council attended National Council for Mental Health. Following awareness programmes were conducted for them. It was conducted by Dr. Nirosha Mendis, Consultant Psychiatrist, President NCMH.
  • Introduction to National Council for Mental Health and the services providing  mental health and mental health care.
  • Quality of life improvement and skill development of those with long term mentally ill, conducted at Borella day centre and residential facility Gorakana.
  • Mental health services are  provided in Sri Lanka and in other countries. This programme was conducted by Dr. Nirosha Mendis, Consultant Psychiatrist.
  •  Programmes conducted at the Rehabilitation Division were also observed by them.
  • Questions on the above programmes were answered by the resource persons who conducted the programmes.

A work shop on Mental Health and Stress Management was held on 02nd July 2014 for members of The Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation and staff at Rajagiriya. The work shop was conducted by Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. (Mrs) Sunitha Galappathi.

Annual One Day Trip for Clients at the Rehabilitation Centre

The National Council for Mental Health at Borella, organized their annual one day trip for their clients at the rehabilitation centre, on the 27th of June 2014. They were able to visit the Galle Fort, Galle National Museum, Galle Beach, Public Park and the Kande Viharaya Buddhist Temple in Aluthgama. A full day activity was planned out for the clients and their staff. They were able to enjoy themselves and were very appreciative.

A Shramadana Campaign at Gorakana Residential Facility

A Shramadana Campaign was organized on 20th June, 2014 at the Gorakana Residential Facility with the assistance of Sri Lanka Air Force personnel from Ratmalana Air Force Base Office. About 30 of the SLAF personnel joined in the campaign from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cleaning of the premises and the windows, painting, cleaning of the garden area for the prevention of mosquito breeding are some of the activities that were handled by the SLAF staff during this campaign. After the activities of this shramadana campaign, a friendly get together was held for the staff and clients of the Centre with SLAF personnel, inclusive of the Air Commodore and his officers. Various speeches were held by the officers of SLAF and Mr. Nishantha Withanage one of the Senior Mental Health Officers, on behalf of the Gorakana Residential Facility. This Shramadana Campaign was an immense gain and a benefit for the clients and staff of the Gorakana Residential Facility.

Volunteers from United Kingdom visits the Resource Centre at Gorakana

Volunteers from United Kingdom visits the Resource Centre at Gorakana for the purpose of acquiring the knowledge in psychosocial Skills Development programs and Clinical intervention, which are provided to the persons who are mentally affected in Sri Lanka. They represent reputed Universities such as Kings College at London and other Universities. Occupational therapy, Psychology graduates and Nurses are among the volunteers and they enthusiastically participated in activities with the inmates at the residential facility

The National Council for Mental Health held its 31st Annual General Meeting

The National Council for Mental Health held its 31st Annual General Meeting on 30th May 2014 at the head office Borella, in the presence of a large gathering. Air Chief Marshal Harsha Abeywickrema, (former Air force commander) graced the occasion as the guest of Honour. Many other distinguished guests and NCMH staff at Borella and Gorakana attended this event. Dr.Nirosha Mendis, Director, Consultant and Psychiatrist of NCMH was unanimously elected as the new president for year 2014 at the AGM. The event ended successfully.

Vesak Bodu Bakthi Gee Programme at Gorakana Residential Facility

The Annual 'Vesak Bodhu Bakthi Gee' programme was held on 14th May 2014 at the Gorakana residential facility. The lyrics and music for the songs were composed by Mr. Madura Gunawardena, Senior Mental Health Officer. The staff and clients actively participated in the singing. The event was organized by Mr. Hema Nishantha Withanage, Senior Mental Health Officer. A distinguished gathering comprising Dr. Gamini Premathilaka, Consultant Psychiatrist and special invitees along with the residents in the vicinity attended the programme

Bank of Ceylon - Vesak Sil Campaign

Bank of Ceylon, Head Office organized a 'Vesak Sil Campaign'. The topics discussed at the programme were on various aspects. On an invitation by the Buddhist Society of Bank of Ceylon, Head Office. Dr. Nirosha Mendis, Vice President, Consultant Psychiatrist, of NCMH, addressed the devotees. This topic was mainly outlined to the audience, on how it will effect the devotees, to get relief and overcome mental stress and mental health, when practicing Buddhism. Staff of Bank of Ceylon and their friends, relatives, members of the public were present on this occasion. A support staff of senior officers from NCMH also participated at this event.

A mental health awareness programme was organized on 09th May, 2014 at St. Xavier's College, Ja-ela, based on a request made by its Principal, Mrs.M.L.P. Silva. A large gathering comprising students, parents and teachers attended this programme. Dr. Gamini Premathilake, Consultant Psychiatrist conducted this programme successfully with the assistance of Captain G.P.Subasinghe and Ms. Susanthi Fernando of NCMH Rehabilitation Centre.

The Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebration of NCMH Borella

The Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebration of NCMH Borella centre was held on 25th April, 2014, which is an annual event, especially done for the care receivers in the Rehabilitation Division. The care receivers, volunteers, care givers of the Rehabilitation centre were present at the occasion. There was fun and entertainment in the events of eating buns, lime & spoon, blowing balloons, breaking the pot by the blind, marking the eye of the elephant and musical chairs, selecting of the Avurudu kumari and Avurudu kumarya are the contests that were held on that day. All clients participated in the events, where prizes were awarded for the respective winners.

Sinhala & Hindu New Year Celebration at NCMH Borella centre

A ceremony to felicitate Professor Nalaka Mendis the founder of NCMH was held on 20th April, 2014 at the Gorakana residential facility. Portraits of Professor Nalaka Mendsi and Mr. Edwin Mendis the donor of the land were unveiled at the centre. A special award was made to Professor Nalaka Mendis in appreciation of his services rendered to the organization. A distinguished gathering comprising clergy, special invitees, care givers and the residents of the area were present at the ceremony.

On the same day afternoon, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations were held with lot of enthusiasm. The activities comprised of several games (sack race, balloon race, musical chairs etc.) and entertainment comprising of the selection of 'Avurudu Kumari', folk songs and dance items. A large gathering witnessed the evening's event.

Community Service Project at NCMH

Sri Lanka Air Force Seva Vanita Unit launched a community service project at the National Council for Mental Health “Sahanaya” at No.96/20, Kitulwatta Road, Borella on 14th March 2014.

This project was done to renovate and clean up entire premises, including painting a part of the building and providing necessary items to the Institute. The event was organized under the guidance of the Chairperson of SLAF Seva Vanita Unit, Mrs. Roshani Gunatilleke, who visited the Institute on 1st April, 2014 after the renovations were completed.The officials of the Institute warmly welcomed the Chairperson, SLAF Seva Vanita Unit, Mrs. Roshani Gunatilleke and expressed their gratitude for the service rendered by the SLAF, SVU

32ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR MENTAL HEALTH

32nd Anniversary of the National Council for Mental Health was celebrated on Friday 07th May 2014 with the participation of the neighboring community. The programme was initiated by unveiling a portrait of Professor Nalaka Mendis, the Founder of the organization.

The chief guest for this occasion was Dr. (Mrs.) Rasanjali Hettiarachchi, Director of Mental Health Services. The ceremonial speech was presented by the founder of NCMH Professor Nalaka Mendis who highlighted the cause of the organization with past memories to the distinguished gathering. After the opening speech, the guests and others were treated with refreshments. The neighborhood community, invitees, friends and relatives of staff graced the occasion.

The day's activities were highlighted with the under mentioned campaigns sponsored by the National Institute of Blood Transfusion Service, Dental Institute of Ministry of Health, Diabetes Association of Sri Lanka, Ceyline Pharma, Torrent Pharmacy, Mega Pharma, Asiri Surgicals, Central Hospitals and Lions Club of Colombo Orient, respectively.

  • Medical Examination and treatment - 100 persons
  • Dental Clinic - 110 persons
  • Blood donation programme - 40 persons
  • Counseling service - 23 persons
  • Consultation service on mental disorders - 20 persons
  • Diabetes screening - 110 persons
  • Eye clinic - 103 persons

As a gesture of Goodwill to NCMH the food & beverage items were sponsored by M/s. Nestle Lanka Limited, Lalanka Water Management (Pvt) Limited, Ceylon Biscuits Limited and Wasana Bakers Limited.

The day's activities ended with a workshop conducted by Ann Errambault a volunteer at NCMH. The entire programme was a great success.

An awareness programme held organising a one day workshop by NCMH Gorakana Centre. Those participated amongst are 35 Health Officers, on 12th February from 9.00a.m. to 3.00 p.m. including Public Health Nursing Sisters , Public Health Officers and Mid Wives in the Kalutara District. Counselling and mental health on teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, suicidal attempts in teenagers and youth, alcoholism and tobacco consumption in children was out lined by the Volunteers and Counsellors of NCMH namely -

Awareness Programme on Mental Health for Social Service Officers

The National Council for Mental Health "Sahanaya" held one day workshop on 30th Mental Health for Social Service Officers of the Department of Social Services of Western Province from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. at NCMH Auditorium.The programme was based on Common Psychiatric Diseases and Psycho Social Problems in Sri Lanka.

Whilst, Dr. Mrs. S. Galapatti spoke on the Common Psychiatric Diseases of Sri Lanka, Mrs. N. Waidyaratna, Psycho Therapist of NCMH spoke on "Psycho Therapy" to the officers of Department of Social Services at Western Province.

The Welcome speech was given by Mr. G.P.Subasinghe of NCMH, the opening speech by Mrs. Indumathi Katipearachchi Assistant Director of Department of Social Services, the introduction of NCMH and its services provided outlined by Mr. I.D. Danasiri, the introduction on Rehabilitation was by Ms. Susanthi Fernando of NCMH, Introduction of Gorakana Residential was given by Mr.Madhura Gunawardene. It was an amazing day of entertainment! Our guests was none other than the "Clients" in Rehabilitation Centre of NCMH 'SAHANAYA'. Creating a memorable event at the Dehiwala Zoo! Imagine a picnic at the Great Meadow. The tour started at about 9.30 a.m. Around 20 Clients accompanied by two Mental Health Officers. The show around was guided by a Zoo Representative explaining the activities and movements therein of the Zoological animals. Enjoying a lunch carried away by the participants the day's outing ended at about 3 p.m. making the event at the Zoo special.

Rehabilitation Clients at 'Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaha'

The 'Clients' were talem to Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya situated on the banks of Kelani River. Being just seven miles from Colombo. Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is the most sought after Temple for the Buddhists in and around Colombo A group of 15-17 clients from NCMH participated in the religious activities out carried such as 'Nil Mal' from the nearby 'Pond' to NCMH with coconut oil, incense sticks etc., for worshiping Lord Buddha. An explanation was given by a Buddhist Monk to the Clients of the wall pictures and statues at the temple made them a memorable pilgrimage, which wounded at about 2.30 p.m. after the mid day meal consumption.
